Most everyone has some idea of how they would change the world. They are sure they could change the political system, the educational system and improve the culture of our nation. For many they are frustrated because they feel their voices are muted and there is no way to effect change.
Yet there is one thing we can do, one thing we can change; and that is ourselves. If we want a better world, why not try being a better person. A story is told of a man who was moving to a new town. On his way into the town he passed a house where an old man was sitting on the porch. “What kind of people live in this town?”, he asked. The old man replied, “What kind of people were in the town from which you came?” “They were kind, helpful, loving people.”, said the man. “That’s the kind of folks you’ll find here.”, was the reply.
The point is, our view of the world is usually skewed by our own attitude. If our attitude is negative, distrustful, and angry the world seems such a dark and foreboding place. However, if our attitude is positive and accepting, the world seems to be a challenging but good place.
If we see the need for change and we want to change our world, the best place to start is with self.
